Overview
Located within the Hiawatha National Forest’s limits in Chippewa County, Eckerman is an unincorporated community that is part of Chippewa Township. Founded in 1889, the small community of Eckerman was established by a timber jobber known as Mr. Eckerman, who named the community after himself. Eckerman is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Sault St. Marie, the county seat of Chippewa County. In addition, Eckerman is just a mile north via the M-28 to Paradise.
The community of Eckerman began as a supply depot for district logging camps. After years of progress, it experienced a decline in lumber activity as the majority of sawmills fell into hard times and eventually closed down. By 1939, the only evidence of lumber activity in Eckerman was a lone sawmill. Today, hardwood forests have grown abundant again due to reforestation.

Chippewa County is home to several county parks that feature hiking trails that vary in difficulty. With Sault St. Marie nearby, residents and tourists can also venture to the Chippewa County’s seat for more shopping and dining options and recreational opportunities.
